Tatiana, 64, and her husband, Sergey, live in the war-torn city of Kherson, Ukraine. Their lives have been turned upside down since the war began. They lived throug months of Russian occupation. Now liberated, they endure the constant danger of shelling and drone attacks that continue to plague their city.
When the bombardments become unbearable, they seek temporary refuge with relatives in a safer region. But they always return to Kherson. It’s their home, and like many others nearing retirement, they face challenges that make leaving permanently impossible. With social security systems in disarray and no income, moving isn’t an option.
Broken windows and plywood
Their resilience has been tested time and again. After a recent attack in November, their home suffered significant damage from the blast waves. The old wooden windows and doors shattered, leaving gaping holes that let in the freezing cold. They patched them with plywood as best they could, but the rooms became dark, and the chill was impossible to escape.
How your gift can make a difference
This winter, thanks to generous donations from people like you, Tatiana and Sergey’s home has been renovated. The broken windows have been replaced with sturdy, cold-proof plastic ones, bringing warmth and light back into their lives. It’s a small but meaningful step toward restoring a sense of safety and normalcy in a city that has seen so much devastation.
Your donation provided this couple—and many others like them—with the essentials they need to survive: durable, insulated windows that restore warmth and safety to their home. More people are waiting to improve their situation. The devastation of war has stripped many of their sense of normalcy. Providing something as simple as a repaired window is more than just a physical fix—it’s a reminder that they are not forgotten, that people care, and that hope is still within reach.
