Following independence from the USSR, state-owned farms were privatized and became the property of the former employees. Land was fragmented into many pieces, most between 1 and 3 hectares and too small for profitable farming. Collaboration was understandably a sensitive topic given the recent history of communism, and a lack of capital and aging population made independent enterprises virtually untenable in many villages. In 2005, individuals in one such village sought the help of one of the current shareholders of Adama farm. Adama Ltd. was born with the vision of promoting employment, supporting rehabilitation centers, assisting in village infrastructure, and providing an income to the impoverished elderly landlords whose land would otherwise be unused.
Adama farm was created as an independent business operation. The company rents land from many individuals to create a substantial area for farming while providing income for landowners. Additionally, the company owns capital in the form of machinery, buildings, and a water tower. As of 2022, Adama consists of circa 400 hectares of cultivated land where potatoes, cereals, sugar beet, and soy are grown. Additionally, Adama runs a cowshed and a pig farm. Besides permanent and seasonal workers, Adama provides employment for former addicts from the rehabilitation center.
Adama has a significant influence on the region, setting an example to the local community in work ethic and generosity in the following ways:
- Creating an environment for learning and professional development for employees.
- Training on modern intensive agriculture techniques is given to those in the local farming community.
- Aiding rehabilitation centers in maintaining their own agricultural projects.
- Contracting work for farmers with small-scale operations who lack machinery, allowing for more efficient resource management for those outside Adama.
- Providing necessities to the village, such as a clean water supply and road maintenance.
- Giving food from the farm to a children’s summer camp, the elderly, the rehabilitation centers, and two local orphanages.
- Forming agreements that both parties must adhere to with all employees to provide a stable environment and prevent disorderly behavior. For example, unlike other farms, Adama does not allow alcohol on the farm.
As Adama farm continues to successfully grow crops, provide employment and income, and serve the community, it shows the massive potential of a business to provide more than just a service. Adama farm is a beacon of hope. A successful business enterprise which uses its influence for the good of the community, and ultimately, the glory of God.
